County Louth Golf Club

Baltray, Co. Louth

Established 1892 The course at County Louth, known as Baltray, is reckoned to be one of the best in Ireland. There are two fine opening holes and then a classic 4th, but the 5th introduces players to the first of the four short holes - all greens nestling in the sandhills but the 6th is another par 5, followed by two splendid two-shotters. The excitement of the second nine centres on the holes close to the sea and the Mountains of Mourne.

Irish American Football Association

Doug Platten , 2 Harmony Heights, Co. Louth

Relatively new to this country, although membership has increased significantly over the past couple of years. Your local club will assist you in buying the equipment (Helmet, Face Mask, Pads etc.). A physical and often bruising game, but a great team sport and a great way to relieve tension. A hard-knocking sport, it is for those who are tough of mind and body. Of course, extensive padded equipment helps. But you must use your head in football, and not just for blocking. American Football is a game of strategy, which requires a certain amount of discipline. There are 22 positions on every team plus kickers and substitutes. The quarterback is the player who is in charge on the field; he tells the others what to do and who to watch If you want to play football, you should know about the field. It is 120 yards long and 53 and one-third yards wide. The sideline is a line up and down each side for all 120 yards. If any part of the runner or the ball touches on or outside the sideline, he is out of bounds. The goal line is the line you need to cross to score a touchdown. The offensive team tries to go down the field to cross the goal line protected by the defensive team. The ten yards from the goal line to the end line is known as the end zone. Hashmarks are small lines parallel to the sidelines. THE POSITIONS There are several different positions you can play and each calls for different abilities. For example, the wide receiver (offense)might be the individual who is smaller and fleeter of foot. Whereas, a tight end needs to be bigger to make blocks. A linebacker is usually large so he can stop the run but he must also be quick and agile enough to drop back against passes. WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED? Equipment includes helmet, face mask, mouth guard, shoulder pads, thigh and knee pads, hip pads and rib pads. Despite all this padding, one must be strong to play the game.

The Tain Holiday Village

Co. Louth

The Tain (Cattle Raid) is one of the earliest pieces of Irish Mythological Literature with tales of heroic feats and fierce battles. One of the most famous legends is about The Tain Bo Cuailgne (The Cattle Raid of Cooley). In it Queen Maeve of Connaught invades Ulster to steal the Mighty Brown Bull of Cooley - and because the Ulster Warriors are struck down with a strange mystical illness, it is left to the hero Cuchulainn to defend the Province alone; he eventually defeats the men of Connaught but is mortally wounded and dies standing strapped to a stone pillar. The Tain Holiday Village is only an hours drive from Belfast City Airport and Dublin International Airport. In a unique setting it offers you a very special holiday experience combining modern leisure and accommodation facilities with Medieval Carlingford in its unique setting with harbour, castles, heritage centre, Dominican Friary, pubs, restaurants, art galleries and quaint shops.
